One chip. A lifetime of finding your way home.
Collars slip. Tags fade. A microchip is permanent — a grain-of-rice-sized ID implanted in seconds that links your pet to you forever. $49, done during any house call.
A True Story
“Without that chip? Honestly, they probably wouldn’t have found him.”
Dr. Steve
Why we’re adamant about microchipping every pet.
About seven years ago, a family in West Palm Beach called us — their Golden Retriever had bolted through an open gate during a thunderstorm. Three weeks later, someone found him wandering twenty miles away in Delray Beach. No collar, no tags.
The shelter scanned him, found his microchip, and within two hours there was a family reunion. That call changed how we talk about microchipping. It’s not a nice-to-have. In Palm Beach County — with the hurricanes, the construction noise, the thunderstorm season — it’s the difference between “eventually” and “too late.”
We’ve microchipped thousands of pets over three decades. We’ve also seen too many situations where a pet was found but never made it home because there was no way to identify them.
Five steps. Done in minutes.
No anesthesia needed. It feels like a regular vaccine shot — most pets don’t even flinch. We’ve done this thousands of times.

Small chip. Permanent identity.
The chip itself is about the size of a grain of rice — sometimes smaller. It sits permanently under the skin between the shoulder blades and contains a unique 15-digit ID number. Nothing to charge, nothing to replace.

Every chip has a globally unique number that links to your contact info in the national registry.

The chip activates only when a scanner passes over it. Nothing to maintain, ever.
100%
Every shelter and vet clinic in Palm Beach County uses universal scanners — reads all chip brands.

Modern chips are designed to stay put. In 30+ years we’ve seen maybe three chips shift — all still scannable.
One-time cost. Lifetime protection.
No monthly fees. No annual renewals for the chip itself. Just update your contact information if you move — free, online, takes two minutes. This is a one-time investment in permanent peace of mind.

Palm Beach County has everything that makes pets go missing.
Hurricanes. Thunderstorm season. Construction noise. Open gates. Busy roads. Animal Care and Control here is excellent about scanning every pet that comes in — but they’re also busy. The faster they can identify your pet, the faster you get that phone call..
- Thunderstorms and hurricane season send terrified pets bolting through open gates
- Construction noise is one of the most common escape triggers
- Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control scans every incoming pet — but only a chip gives them your number
- Collars fall off. Tags rust and fade. A microchip doesn’t.
- If Animal Control picks up your pet, a microchip is required before release

Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt?
About the same as a vaccine. Most pets don’t even react when we do it. Some yelp for a second, but then they’re fine. Many dogs sit there and don’t even flinch.
Can it move around inside my pet?
Technically possible but really rare. This was an issue many years ago but today chips have anti-migration technology. The area between the shoulder blades doesn’t have a lot of movement, and the chip is designed to stay put. In over thirty years of veterinary practice, we’ve seen maybe three chips migrate slightly, and they were still easily scannable.
When should I get my pet microchipped?
Inserting a microchip can be done at any office visit. There are no age restrictions. The most common time we do it is when the pet is spayed or neutered.
What if I move or change my phone number?
Just log into the registry website and update your information. Takes two minutes. That’s why registration is so important – you need access to that account.
Can the shelter definitely find my contact information?
If the chip is registered with current information? Yes. If you never registered it or your info is ten years old? That’s a problem. That’s why we help you register it right during your visit so it’s done correctly from the start.
Is microchipping required in Palm Beach County?
While not legally required, it’s strongly recommended by animal control and shelters throughout Palm Beach County. Many adoption agencies now microchip pets before adoption. If your pet gets picked up by Animal Control they will require you to microchip before releasing the pet back to you.
Twenty minutes. One-time cost. Permanent peace of mind.
Add microchipping to any house call — wellness exam, vaccines, senior visit, whatever brings us out. Or schedule it as a standalone visit if you’ve been putting it off.
